A keratin treatment at home is a smoothing service you apply yourself: clarify, apply the treatment, process for 40 to 60 minutes, then blow-dry and flat-iron to seal. It reduces frizz, adds shine and loosens the curl pattern without permanently altering your hair's structure, and lasts three to five months with sulphate-free aftercare.
A keratin treatment at home is what Canadians use when their hair can't decide whether to frizz, flatten or flee. Below-freezing temperatures in the winter and humidity in the summer are both enemies of waves, curls, and coils. There's an at-home solution that can smooth and strengthen your hair without requiring salon time or costs. Here's what works for hair in Canada.
What Is a Keratin Treatment at Home?
A keratin treatment at home is when you perform a smoothing service on your own: clarify hair, apply the keratin treatment, allow 40-60 minutes for it to process, blow-dry and flat-iron to seal in. This lessens frizz, brings shine, and loosens curl pattern. It will not permanently alter the natural pattern of your hair. This can last you between 3 and 5 months.
Is It Safe to Do a Keratin Treatment at Home?
Yes, it is safe to do a keratin treatment at home as long as you're using a formaldehyde-free formula and following the timing instructions and application directions exactly.
We get it if you've wondered, can I do keratin treatment at home before sitting down at your salon appointment? Our formulas are formaldehyde-free, and that holds whether a stylist applies them or you do. The Best is the same product in the salon and in your bathroom. What varies across the wider category is the formula, not the setting: some smoothing products release formaldehyde vapour when heat is applied, and some do not. Read the label rather than assuming a professional or a consumer product is automatically the safer one, and patch test behind the ear 48 hours ahead if you have reacted to hair products before.
When to Wait or Check With a Stylist First
Doing this at home is perfectly safe for most people. A couple of things to wait on, though:
-
Hair that is severely over-processed or broken. If your strand snaps with very little stretch when wet, take the time to rebuild with protein and moisture before sealing in another service.
-
Recent relaxers, perms, or other chemical services in the past 2 weeks. Allow properly reconstructed hair time to recover before placing a smoothing treatment on top of the chemicals.
-
Irritated scalp, open scratches or scrapes, eczema or psoriasis flare that haven't settled. Wait until your skin is clear.
-
You've had reactions to hair products in the past. Patch test behind the ear at least 48 hours prior to use. Don't skip this step.
-
Pregnancy or breastfeeding. While our formulas are formaldehyde-free, it doesn't hurt to mention any chemical exposure to your doctor when pregnant or breastfeeding.
Either way, work with a window open or a fan, since any smoothing treatment will give off steam and some vapour when you pass the flat iron over it.
What an At-Home Keratin Treatment Does for Canadian Hair
Keratin is the structural protein your hair is built from, and Canadian conditions work against it from two directions. Humid coastal air forces moisture into the shaft and swells it, lifting the cuticle and returning frizz. Dry prairie and winter indoor air does the reverse, pulling moisture out until the cuticle roughens and cracks. Neither destroys keratin outright, but both accelerate the cuticle wear that lets a smoothing treatment fade early. That is why the same treatment reads as longer-lasting in a temperate climate than it does through a Halifax summer or an Edmonton February.
All GK Hair treatments are formulated with Juvexin, our exclusive protein blend, which works to replace lost keratin. We use Juvexin in every product we make because it penetrates the hair shaft, building strength instead of coating the hair like other proteins.
In the consumer survey shown on our product page, 99% of participants reported smoother hair, 98% noticed reduced frizz and 96% said their hair felt healthier after The Best Hair Treatment. Those results come from users applying the same formula our salons use, which is the point: the operator changes, the formula does not. Used correctly, it restores what Canadian conditions wear down, which lets hair maintain its smoothness and frizz reduction for a full 3-5 months. We sell to over 75 countries, and this formula works in every climate we sell to.
What's in an At-Home Keratin Treatment Kit? (Ingredients Explained)
A keratin treatment at home kit should carry you from the clarifying wash through to aftercare. The Best Keratin Professional Hair Kit contains four steps in five products: the pre-treatment pH+ Clarifying Shampoo that strips build-up and opens the cuticle, The Best Hair Treatment itself, the Deep Conditioner you apply after rinsing, and the Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner duo that carries the result forward between washes. That last pair matters more than it sounds: a sulphate shampoo will pull the treatment out faster than anything else you do to your hair. The 300 ml kit (the size refers to its full-size Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner; the treatment inside is 100 ml) supplies that Deep Conditioner in a 20 ml travel size and adds a bowl, an application brush, gloves and a shower cap, while the 100 ml kit holds pH+ Clarifying Shampoo, The Best Hair Treatment and the Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner but leaves out the Deep Conditioner and the tools.
Why should you care about the various keratin treatment at home ingredients? Because not all formulas sold in Canada are created equal, the differences will affect not only your results but your safety as well.
Our formulas concentrate on our exclusive protein blend, Juvexin, botanical oils, and smoothing amino acids to strengthen and repair hair from within, instead of merely coating it like most store-bought formulas. Those store-bought formulas use basic hydrolyzed keratin, or broken-down protein that fills in porous or damaged areas of the hair shaft.
With formaldehyde-based straightening treatments, the chemical actually bonds with your hair. It's much straighter as a result, and the effects typically last longer, sometimes permanently. The danger of inhalation is present once you apply heat to the product, which Health Canada regulates (see below).
Juvexin-Based Formula vs. Standard Hydrolyzed Keratin vs. Formaldehyde Straightening Treatment
| Factor | Juvexin-Based (GK Hair) | Standard Hydrolyzed Keratin | Formaldehyde Straightening |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it works | Plant-based Juvexin V2 protein works from the inside out to repair and strengthen the hair shaft | Small protein fragments temporarily fill porous, damaged areas | Chemically cross-links hair bonds for a stronger reshape |
| Results longevity | Roughly 3 to 5 months with proper aftercare | A few weeks up to about 2 months | Several months, sometimes longer, but hair-dependent |
| Best hair type | Wavy, curly, coily, and colour-treated hair | Mildly damaged or porous hair needing a light refresh | Very coarse or resistant hair wanting maximum straightening |
| Chemical concerns | Formaldehyde-free formulas available | Varies by brand; always check the label | Releases formaldehyde vapour when heat-activated |
What's the Difference Between Keratin Smoothing and At-Home Keratin Straightening?
Keratin smooths and softens your natural texture. At home keratin straightening treatment formulas are formulated to chemically reshape your hair, strand by strand. Our formulas are smoothing formulas. They help reduce frizz, add shine, and loosen curl patterns without altering the permanent structure of your hair as a formaldehyde-based straightener does.
Health Canada restricts the amount of formaldehyde in hair-straightening products that emit vapour when blow-dried or flat-ironed to no more than 0.01%, a restriction the agency established because of concerns over inhalation during application. The limit applies to any straightening product sold in Canada, professional or retail, so the useful check is the label rather than where you bought it. If a product does not state that it is formaldehyde-free, treat that as a reason to ask.
Which Canadian Hair Types Benefit Most From At-Home Keratin Treatment?
Curly, wavy, and coily textures will see the biggest difference from a keratin treatment at home. Hair with these textures tends to frizz, dehydrate, and matte the easiest during both humid summers and dry winters, so smoothing it out provides the most noticeable results. You'll experience softer, shinier strands with minimal breakage, as well as a faster styling process.
Straight hair will benefit as well; it's just a different set of problems that are solved. Less frizz means less static, and you'll find your hair retains its shine longer, even on days with humidity. Fine or straight hair just needs less time because there isn't as much texture to reform, which is why we recommend the lower amount of processing time for straight hair.
The Best Hair Treatment
The Best Hair Treatment is one of our best at home keratin treatment kits for Canadians. Sold in 100 ml, 300 ml, and 1,000 ml bottles, The Best Hair Treatment formula has been enhanced with Juvexin V2, our new vegetable protein discovered in quinoa and pea, as well as natural seed extracts.
With proper maintenance and follow-up products, your hair will remain smooth and silky for 3-5 months when treated correctly. Best for anyone with wavy, frizzy hair or those stubborn curly hairs in need of intense anti-frizz benefits. If you have hair textures that fight humidity the most, you will see the biggest difference.
Vegan Hair Treatment
If you have curly or colour-treated hair and want plant-based smoothing with a botanical blend, then a natural keratin treatment at home is a great solution.
Our Vegan Hair Treatment comes in two variants. The Best Coco pairs Juvexin V2 with coconut oil for deep hydration, vitamin E for elasticity, and goji berry to guard against breakage. The Best Acai swaps those for acerola, grapes and acai, an antioxidant-led version that suits colour-treated hair well. Both are 100% formaldehyde-free.
The Vegan Hair Treatment works best on curly or colour-treated hair. Note that, as with most smoothing treatments, there can be a little colour lift, so if you need to match an exact shade, schedule your colour service about a week after your treatment.
How to Prep and Apply an At-Home Keratin Treatment
There are three secrets to salon-quality results at home: follow the instructions step by step, wait the required amount of time, and section like your life depends on it.
What You Need and How Long It Takes
Plan to take about two to two-and-a-half hours from start to finish, from shampoo to the last flat iron pass. About 40-60 minutes of that is hands-off processing time, when you put the treatment under a cap and do something else. Make sure you have everything handy before you start:
-
pH+ Clarifying Shampoo (for pre-treatment wash)
-
Deep Conditioner (for after the rinse step)
-
Application brush and 4-6 sectioning clips
-
A plastic processing cap
-
A blow dryer and a flat iron that holds a consistent temperature
Steps:
-
Wash twice with clarifying shampoo (we recommend the pH+ Clarifying Shampoo). Leave it in for 3 minutes each time before rinsing out. Make sure you don't touch the scalp. This will help remove build-up on your hair and open up your cuticles.
-
Towel-dry hair until it is 80 to 90% dry. You want your hair to be damp before applying your treatment. You don't want it soaking wet, but you don't want it completely dry either.
-
Part hair into 4-6 sections, clipping each one up.
-
Apply your treatment in half-inch slices. Start about a quarter-inch away from the scalp and work your way down to the ends. Never apply directly onto the scalp.
-
Comb through each section, making sure all strands are saturated with the product.
-
Let it sit under a plastic cap for 40-60 minutes. If you have fine or wavy hair, do the full 40 minutes. If you have super-thick, coarse hair or really tight curls, let it process for the full hour. You'll thank us later.
-
Rinse hair thoroughly with warm water. Continue rinsing until the water runs clear. If hair feels over-processed, shampoo hair with Moisturizing Shampoo. Concentrate shampoo on the ends. Follow up with the Deep Conditioner and rinse after 5 minutes.
-
Blow-dry hair straight on high heat with a round brush until 100% dry. Once hair is dry, flat-iron at 400°F (about 205°C). If hair feels over-processed, drop the heat to 375°F. And if your ends are weak or damaged, drop it down even lower. Pass the iron 2 to 4 times over each section to seal in the treatment.
Stylist's Corner
Our education team trains stylists on this system, and the fault we correct most often is not the formula or the timing. It is slices taken too thick to saturate.
Four to six clipped pieces are just the framework. Saturation occurs when you process each section in half-inch slices, a quarter-inch away from the scalp. If you cannot see comb tracks through a slice, it is too thick. The middle of that slice will not absorb the product evenly. Most of what we think is patchiness from the formula is actually a too-thick slice.
How to Keep the Result
Aftercare is what carries a keratin treatment at home through to month five. Here is the routine:
-
Wash: shampoo 2-3 times a week with Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner. Both are sulphate-free, so they seal in moisture instead of pulling the treatment out.
-
Refresh: spritz Leave-In Conditioner Spray on non-wash days to detangle and defrizz, which can be a struggle during Canada's humid summers, and to prep hair before styling.
-
Finish: smooth a few drops of Argan Oil Serum through mid-lengths and ends to lock down the cuticle, add shine and stop static.
-
Reset: in hard-water areas, use pH+ Clarifying Shampoo every few weeks to lift mineral deposits, then follow with Moisturizing Conditioner to replace the moisture it removes.
Regional Considerations Across Canada
Where you live changes how often you will want to retouch. On the wet coasts, in Vancouver, Victoria or Halifax, plan for the shorter end of the 3-to-5-month window, since constant airborne moisture works the cuticle open faster. Prairie and northern residents usually land nearer the longer end, since dry air lifts the cuticle more slowly than constant humidity does, but they trade humidity frizz for static and flyaways; a few drops of Argan Oil Serum through mid-lengths on dry days handles that. In either case, the treatment is doing the same job, holding the cuticle down, and it is the weather, not the formula, that sets how long that holds.
Water Quality and Keratin Longevity
Hard water is common across much of Canada, and it shortens a smoothing treatment faster than soft water does. Calcium and magnesium deposit on the cuticle with every wash, building a rough mineral film that lifts the cuticle scales the treatment sealed down. Frizz returns sooner, shine dulls, and the hair starts to feel coated rather than smooth.
Two things help. A shower filter cuts the mineral load at the source and is the lower-effort fix. Failing that, work a clarifying wash into your routine every few weeks to lift the deposits before they build up. That is the reset step in the routine above: pH+ Clarifying Shampoo, which is formulated for exactly this, followed by Moisturizing Conditioner, since clarifying strips moisture along with the minerals.
Can You Do an At-Home Keratin Treatment on Colour-Treated Hair?
Yes, our formulas are safe on coloured and chemically treated hair. Our own guidance is to treat first and colour afterwards. The smoothing step can lift the shade slightly, so colouring after the treatment gives you the tone you actually chose.
You can also do both on the same day. If you are colouring after the treatment on the same day, use a deposit-only colour with a 10 volume developer or lower; anything stronger asks the cuticle to lift again immediately after you have just sealed it. If you want a permanent colour with more lift, leave about a week between the two services.
Here is why the developer strength matters. Colour molecules and keratin both fight for space on the hair shaft: permanent dye must raise the cuticle to embed pigment in the cortex, and the smoothing treatment has just sealed that cuticle down, so a strong developer straight after treatment undoes part of the work. Mineral build-up from hard water sits on that same cuticle and stops colour from penetrating evenly, which is one more reason to clarify before you colour again.
The Cleveland Clinic explains that keratin is a protein that builds hair, skin, and nails. When you return it to the shaft, you're strengthening the fibre instead of changing it like you would with permanent colour or a relaxer.
Cost and Value for Canadians
Doing a keratin treatment at home is significantly cheaper than visiting the salon several times a year. 300 ml of The Best Hair Treatment will cost CAD $212.40 and is estimated to cover three to five treatments, depending on hair length and volume. That's about $42-$71 per treatment. If you want to give it a try before committing, buy the 100 ml bottle for CAD $78.80.
If you have a busy work schedule or don't live close to a salon, DIY-ing is perfect for having salon results whenever you want.
Common Myths About At-Home Keratin Treatments
A common keratin treatment myth is that do-it-yourself kits only make your hair straight. Most kits will not force your hair to be straight. Instead, they work to soften and strengthen your hair, no matter what texture you have.
A second myth about at-home keratin treatments is that they are harmful. With a formaldehyde-free formula like ours, hair can be safely treated without a salon tech as long as the directions on the packet are read and followed.
Tips to Make Keratin Results Last Longer
Alongside the aftercare routine above, a few simple habits extend your results:
-
Protect hair from harsh weather by covering it before going out in extreme cold.
-
Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase to cut the friction that roughens the cuticle overnight.
-
Do not wear tight ponytails, clips, or headbands during the first few days after treatment.
-
Eat foods higher in protein to support healthy new growth at the follicle. It won't extend your current treatment, since that's already bonded to the hair you have, but it helps the hair growing in behind it stay strong.
Your Smoothest Hair Season Is Here
Wavy, curly, and coily hair is where you'll see the most dramatic change when getting a keratin treatment at home. But reducing frizz will fight off whatever Mother Nature throws your way here in Canada if you have straight hair too. And of course, all hair types will leave you with shiny hair that's less prone to static. GK Hair has a formaldehyde-free formula for every hair type. FAQs
Which at-home keratin treatment works best for curly hair?
Curly and coily textures typically respond well to The Best Hair Treatment, which is formulated for stronger frizz control on resistant textures. Vegan Hair Treatment is also excellent for coloured curly hair, since it's built to work with colour-treated strands.
Does GK Hair offer a plant-based or vegan keratin option?
Yes, and it is no longer a trade-off. Both The Best Hair Treatment and Vegan Hair Treatment are built on Juvexin V2, a plant-based protein from quinoa and pea, and both are vegan formulas. Choose Vegan Hair Treatment for its botanical blend and its two variants; choose The Best for the strongest frizz control on resistant textures.
How is an at-home keratin kit different from a salon treatment?
It's the same formula. The Best Hair Treatment is used in salons and at home, so you're not buying a diluted consumer version. What differs is the operator: a stylist has practised sectioning and salon-grade tools, which mostly affects evenness rather than strength, which is exactly why sectioning finely matters so much when you do it yourself. The trade-off is price and convenience: at-home kits cost a fraction of the price, and you don't have to make an appointment.
How long should I wait before washing my hair after an at-home keratin treatment?
Many keratin treatments need 24 to 72 hours before the first wash so the protein can bond. Ours don't. Both The Best Hair Treatment and Vegan Hair Treatment are formulated for a same-day wash, so there's no waiting period and no sleeping with your hair pinned flat. Follow with Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner to help seal in the results.
